The updated tie-breaking regulations by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for NEET UG 2024 aim to establish a more equitable ranking system, emphasizing the importance of performance in specific subjects. As a result, candidates are encouraged to develop strategic approaches encompassing Biology, Chemistry, and Physics to maximize their chances of success.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has revamped the tie-breaking protocol for the forthcoming National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test – Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2024, shaking up the process that determines the ranking of candidates with identical scores.
In the past, the NTA relied on a computerized draw of lots method to break ties between candidates who achieved the same marks or percentile scores. However, for NEET UG 2024, the NTA has opted for a more intricate approach based on candidates’ performance in individual subjects.
Under the revamped policy, if two or more candidates secure identical marks or percentile scores in NEET UG 2024, their inter-se-merit will be determined through a multi-tiered process. First, the evaluation of marks/percentile scores in Biology (Botany and Zoology) takes precedence, followed by an assessment of marks/percentile scores in Chemistry and Physics.
Subsequently, candidates will be assessed based on the proportion of correct and incorrect answers across all subjects, further drilled down to specific subjects like Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. This multi-step tie-breaker system, as outlined by the NTA, entails the following steps:
- Higher marks/percentile score in Biology (Botany and Zoology), followed by,
- Higher marks/percentile score in Chemistry, followed by,
- Higher marks/percentile score in Physics, followed by,
- Less proportion of attempted incorrect and correct answers in all subjects, followed by,
- Less proportion of attempted incorrect and correct answers in Biology (Botany and Zoology), followed by,
- Less proportion of attempted incorrect and correct answers in Chemistry, followed by,
- Less proportion of attempted incorrect and correct answers in Physics.
This alteration promises to have a significant impact on candidates’ rankings, instilling a renewed strategic dimension to exam preparation. Beyond merely aiming for high overall scores, candidates must now ensure competence across individual subjects to secure a favorable position in case of ties.
In addition to this development, the NTA has opened the correction window for NEET UG 2024 from March 18 to 20, 2024, enabling candidates to rectify any errors in their application forms. The NEET UG 2024 exam is scheduled for May 5, 2024, from 2 pm to 5:20 pm, with the duration of the exam remaining unchanged at 200 minutes.
These updates underscore the NTA’s commitment to ensuring fairness and transparency in the examination process, while also empowering candidates to make informed decisions about their academic futures.
