Choosing the Right Career Path in Uncertain Times:
Expert Insights from the Webinar

The webinar kicked off with a candid discussion about the state of education today. Dr.Meenakshi Gupta emphasized that the education sector faces unprecedented challenges, including the rise of online social media, easy money, and students’ lack of life skills. “Children are sitting on a volcano of online social media,” she said. “They want to get attention and make easy money, but they’re not prepared with the necessary life skills. The sentiment was echoed by Mrs.Latha Ravichandran, who highlighted the scarcity of role models and the trend of children wanting to become YouTubers or entrepreneurs.

The panel also discussed the crucial role of parents in shaping their children’s educational journey. Mrs.Latha Ravichandran stressed the need for parents to step back and allow children to choose their career paths. “Parents are not allowing children to choose their careers,” she said. “They want to take up the family or general profession that is considered ‘safe.” To which, Maya Vijayan added that parents need to be more involved in their children’s education, respect their autonomy, and allow them to make mistakes.

Mrs.Jyotsna Kothari, a mother and education expert, brought up the issue of helicopter parents, who are overly involved in their children’s lives and often create more stress than support. “Parents are always hovering over their children, increasing their stress level,” she said. “We must create a culture that encourages children to take risks and make mistakes. Similar sentiment was echoed by Meenakshi Gupta, who emphasized that children need to learn from their mistakes and failures.

The panel also highlighted the importance of role models in shaping young minds. Maya Vijayan emphasized that we must refine and align our competencies according to the market’s demand. “We need to prepare students for the emerging paradigms of the 21st century,” she said. Latha Ravichandran added that the scarcity of role models is a serious issue, and we must create more opportunities for students to learn from successful individuals.

Pallavi Anand, another speaker, highlighted the challenges children face in today’s education system, citing the overwhelming number of available career options. She noted that while the education system has evolved to include more skill-based and experiential learning, children need to be provided with suitable career options to match their interests. This lack of direction and stability leads to clarity and certainty for many children.

She said, “Our children today are walking on the living minds. There has been a paradigm shift. If you look closely, we still have those seven to eight prominent career options for our children that the parents aspire for or the children themselves. We are not looking forward to how many become successful rappers. How many have they become successful entrepreneurs and all because the problem is that they need the right guidance. We need the same number of career options to make the future. So that is what I would say: the more you add in multidisciplinary subjects, the more you must have options that can give them a better future.”

Jitender Saxena expressed concern about students’ current need for more focus, noting that they are scattered in many directions rather than concentrating on their goals. He pointed out that more attention should be given to children’s future, with parents and educators providing clear guidance or support. Saxena shared his experience, mentioning how his daughters frequently changed their career aspirations due to confusion and a lack of direction. He emphasized the need for a collaborative effort between parents and educators to offer better guidance and help students focus on their objectives.
