New Directors Appointed to Six IITs by Ministry of Education

Manindra Agrawal, Sukumar Mishra, Avinash Agarwal, Dr. Devendra Jalihal, Dhirendra S Katti, and Amit Patra have been selected to lead IIT-Kanpur, Dhanbad, Jodhpur, Guwahati, Goa, and IIT-BHU, respectively.

Know the Newly-Appointed Directors:

Manindra Agrawal, the recently appointed director of IIT-Kanpur, brings extensive expertise. He has worked as a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the same institution since 1996. His knowledge covers various topics, including algorithms, complexity theory, computational number theory, algebra, and cryptography. Agrawal’s major achievements include being awarded the Padma Shri in 2013 and working as a Humboldt scholar at the University of Ulm in Germany from 1995 to 1996.

Sukumar Mishra, the incoming director of IIT-Dhanbad, has a notable career as a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT-Delhi. Currently, Mishra is the Dean of Research and External Engagement at the Abu Dhabi branch of IIT Delhi. He previously worked as the Associate Dean of Research and Development at IIT-Delhi from March 1, 2020, until March 31, 2023.

IIT-Kanpur’s mechanical engineering department was home to Avinash Agarwal, a recently appointed professor to IIT-Jodhpur, one of the newer IITs.

Jalihal, the new director of IIT-Guwahati, taught electrical engineering at IIT-Madras. According to his profile, his research interests include signal processing and wireless communication. He has attended IIT-Madras since 2006.

While,Katti was a professor in IIT-Kanpur’s biological sciences and bioengineering department; he has been appointed the director of IIT-Goa. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Mumbai and postdoctoral studies at Drexel University in the United States. He worked as an assistant professor (research track) at Drexel University and subsequently as an assistant professor (tenure track) at the University of Virginia before joining the BSBE department in April 2004.

Patra, previously Deputy Director at IIT Kharagpur, has been appointed Director of IIT BHU. He got his B.Tech., M.Tech., and Ph.D. degrees from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, in 1984, 1986, and 1990, respectively. In 1987, he became a faculty member in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur.

These appointments mark a significant step forward in the leadership of these prominent institutions. The newly appointed directors are expected to bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to help the IITs improve their academic and research performance.
