Supreme Court Upholds NEET UG 2024 Results; No Evidence of Widespread Cheating Found

The ruling made by the Supreme Court in refusal of the revisiting National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate or NEET UG 2024 had lack of material evidence for vitiating, that is, invalidating the results produced by it, nor was there any systemic breach pulling apart from its sanctity.

There was a group of cases heard by a bench that comprised Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra requesting cancellation, retest, and an inquiry under the supervision of the court itself in the NEET UG 2024 examination carried out on May 5. The court informed that there was no proof of systemic leakage relating to the examination. While presenting during the hearing, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) confirmed that there had been a leak in the question paper at Hazaribagh Center, located in Jharkhand state. More so, the CBI also recovered some gadgets that were used by a gang involved in this act, which will be investigated further.

The court also took note of an expert report submitted by IIT Delhi that stated option 4 was the right choice for a multiple-choice question from the exam. The court has instructed IIT Delhi to form a three-member expert committee to give its view on the correct answer.

Demand for JPC Probe

The Federation of Central Universities Teachers Association (FEDCUTA) demands the formation of a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to investigate alleged irregularities in the NEET UG 2024 exam. The association has also called for the immediate scrapping of the National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts exams for admissions into medical colleges.

What was the Government’s Version?

The Union government informed the Supreme Court that there was no proof of widespread cheating or unfair advantage to specific groups of candidates due to unusual results in NEET UG 2024. The government also reported to the court that the Ministry of Education requested IIT Madras to conduct a detailed data analysis on NEET-UG 2024 results.

What happened on July 18?

In the previous hearing held on July 18, the Supreme Court raised concerns over NTA’s theory, which maintains that students had leaked, solved, and memorized the examination paper in just 45 minutes. A lawyer representing one of the petitioners claimed that there was an increment in the syllabus for the exam as it was communicated only a few months prior. He further asserted that Hazaribag’s transport of question papers was compromised. The Chief Justice of India (CJI) informed the petitioners that they had to establish a “systemic” paper leak that impacted the whole test to warrant annulment of the entire examination. According to an article on the legal news site LiveLaw, any re-examination needed to be grounded on concrete evidence proving that the integrity of the complete evaluation had been compromised.
